Apply for a Changemaker Grant

United Way of Greater New Bedford will hold two virtual information sessions next month for anyone interested in applying for a Changemaker Grant.

Changemaker Grants empower ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things by helping their neighborhoods and community. All-volunteer groups in Greater New Bedford can apply for up to $2,500 to complete projects that are engaging, community driven, solutions-focused, and that foster unity through community action.

Last year, the Friends of the Cape Verdean Cultural Committee was awarded a grant to paint a mural depicting the Cape Verdean migration, located in the Monty’s Park area of New Bedford, at the south end of Acushnet Ave. The goal was to improve public perception of the area and to celebrate Cape Verdeans’ many contributions to the city’s history, economy and civic life.

Other grants funded last year included:
a Wareham citizens group, to rehabilitate the Swifts Beach Playground, upgrading equipment and landscaping and making the playground ADA compliant;
the Dartmouth Mom’s Group, for money to help collect, purchase and store basic needs items to give to mothers in need and their children.

“We are proud to support residents who find creative ways to address the challenges they see in their communities,” said Michelle N. Hantman, President & CEO of United Way. “These grassroots, community projects help further the United Way of Greater New Bedford’s mission by focusing on problems related to health, education, financial stability and basic needs.”

In addition to funding, Changemaker groups are further supported with skill-building workshops, networking opportunities, and recruiting new volunteers to assist with their projects through Volunteer SouthCoast.

The Information sessions will take place via Zoom. Sign up online for either session:  Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 1 p.m. or Thursday, Feb. 9,  at 5:30 p.m.

Applications will be accepted Feb. 1 through March 10. For more information, visit unitedwayofgnb.org/changemaker-grants or call 508-994-9625.
