Volunteer Spotlight: Mark Pacheco & Ross Fernandes

Mark & RossFor the past decade, two New Bedford firefighters, Mark Pacheco and Ross Fernandes, have been at the heart of a cherished community tradition—the annual United Way and New Bedford Firefighters Union Toy Drive. This year’s event, the 26th annual drive, continued to demonstrate the incredible spirit of generosity and collaboration that defines Greater New Bedford.

The toy drive, which spans over 60 collection sites across the region, culminates in an extraordinary display of teamwork. Volunteers from the New Bedford Fire Department (NBFD), alongside dedicated United Way staff, take on the monumental task of sorting and distributing the toys. This year, their efforts ensured that over 2,000 toys made their way into the hands of children in need, spreading holiday joy throughout the community.

A special highlight of this year’s drive was the generous contribution from Senator Mark Montigny’s Children’s Fund. Thanks to this thoughtful gift, the team was able to provide gift cards for 300 teenagers, an often-overlooked group during holiday giving campaigns. This addition brought a meaningful touch to the initiative, ensuring that teens in the area felt remembered and valued.
